Both line editing and copy editing are crucial to the editing process. But, they focus on different aspects and each has a purpose.
Line editing:
Line editing focuses on the how your words form artistic and creative images in your readers’ minds. With line editing, I look at clarity, flow, and the style of your writing at a sentence level. Line editing entails paying close attention to language use, narrative voice, how your words enhance your narrative voice, the pacing, and overall readability.
With line editing I will address the stylistic elements of your manuscript. I may need to rephrase sentences and restructure paragraphs. I will also suggest revisions to improve the overall narrative and flow.
My goal, while line editing, is to enhance the quality of what you have by refining the language and style of the manuscript.
Copy editing:
On the other hand, copy editing focuses on the mechanical aspects of writing. Correcting grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax errors are all important aspects. Copy editing also focuses on consistent language use and adherence to your chosen style guide and dictionary.
With copy editing, I will ensure accuracy and consistency in your manuscript. It involves word and sentence-level corrections such as fixing grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, and typographical errors.
The goal is to refine your work and get it ready for querying or publishing. My focus will be on eliminating errors and inconsistencies that could distract and confuse readers, ensuring that the text is clear and coherent.
Proofreading:
Proofreading, which is last, focuses on making sure your work is error-free and ready for publication. It is a surface-level review of your work. The focus is on identifying and correcting errors that may have been missed during the earlier stages of editing. No substantive changes are made to the content or structure.
Developmental editing:
Developmental Editing looks at your big picture elements. Plot, character development, theme, and point of view are just a few elements. Developmental editing is done when you want guidance with your story because there is something you just can’t figure out, and you’ve been through your work multiple times. Developmental editing can also be done after you have completed your first draft and would like an objective outside opinion.

Copy Edit
$0.012 p/w
Ideal for well-written works that nonetheless require a thorough edit and final check. This edit pays attention to the mechanical aspects, such as typos, punctuation, grammar, tense shifts, POV consistency and overall flow, giving your book the polish it needs.
Proofreading
$0.008 p/w
This final step catches last-minute typos, misused/misspelled words, punctuation issues, tense errors, and more. Proofreading is done after line and copy editing.
